Joan Gillcrest    <<back to artists

A well known artist whose works are now fetching high prices and are very collectable. Joan was born on November 2nd 1918 in London. Her father was doctor Sebastian Gilbert Scott who was a pioneer of Radiology along with Madam Curie. He died an official martyr. Joan's mother was Alice O'hara, the daughter of an Australian explorer,

Joan was educated at Wadhurst boarding school, then went on to Upper Chine School on the Isle of Wight. In 1933 she studied at various studios in Paris.

In 1935 she attended Grosvenor School of Art in Victoria, London, under Mr Ian Macnab. In 1942 she married her husband who was a barrister and serving in the Coldstream Guards at the time.
In 1953 she divorced and moved to a studio in Tite Street, Chelsea, London and started to paint again in 1958. She then moved to Cornwall.
